The Vertical Farm: Feeding the World in the 21st Century (Hardcover)

The Vertical Farm: Feeding the World in the 21st Century
The Vertical Farm: Feeding the World in the 21st Century (Hardcover)
By Dickson D. Despommier

Review & Description

Imagine a world where every town has its own local food source, grown in the safest way possible, where no drop of water or particle of light is wasted, and where a simple elevator ride can transport you to nature's grocery store---imagine the world of the vertical farm.Product Description
When Columbia professor Dickson Despommier set out to solve America's food, water, and energy crises, he didn't just think big - he thought up. Despommier's stroke of genius, The Vertical Farm, has excited scientists, architects, and politicians around the globe. These farms, grown inside skyscrapers, would provide solutions to many of the serious problems we currently face, including: allowing year-round crop production; providing food to areas currently lacking arable land; immunity to weather-related crop failure; re-use of water collected by de-humidification of the indoor environment; new employment opportunities; no use of pesticides, fertilizers, or herbicides; drastically reduced dependence on fossil fuels; no crop loss due to shipping or storage; no agricultural runoff; and, many more. Vertical farming can be located on abandoned city properties, creating new urban revenue streams. They will employ lots of skilled and unskilled labor. They can be run on wind, solar, tidal, and geothermal energy. They can be used to grow plants for pharmaceutical purposes or for converting gray water back into drinking water. In the tradition of the bestselling The World Without Us, this is a totally original landmark work destined to become a classic. With stunning illustrations and clear and entertaining writing, this book will appeal to anyone concerned about America's future.

Review & Description

Arizona Way Out West & Wacky, a humorous children's history and activity book affectionately known as AZ WOWW by its multi award-winning co-authors, Conrad J. Storad and Lynda Exley, was designated an official Arizona Centennial Legacy Project by the Arizona Historical Advisory Commission (AHAC) as authorized by the Arizona Legislature. "I am honored to have Arizona Way Out West & Wacky receive this prestigious acknowledgement from the Arizona Historical Advisory Commission,"; says the book s publisher, Linda Radke of Five Star Publications. "From concept to submission to designation, the process took about five months, and the committee is very particular about which projects they accept." Although originally set to be published by January 2012 in time for Arizona's Centennial celebration, Radke says feedback has been so positive she is hoping to have the book available by fall of this year. "Educators get very excited when they hear about AZ WOWW because it makes learning Arizona history fun for grade-schoolers. It delivers history with a humorous edge by including gross, interesting and wacky stories and facts about Arizona, and it s filled with crossword puzzles, games, coloring pages, recipes, crafts and other amusements. Plus, when a school orders a minimum of 30 copies, we send them a certificate of permission that allows them to sidestep the copyright and reproduce as much of the book as they want as long as it is for official school use and not for personal use or to share with another school," explains Radke. When retailers hear about AZ WOWW, they realize the potential it has for Arizona visitors, grandparents sending Arizona mementos off to their grandchildren and special occasion gifts. Another unique aspect of Arizona Way Out West & Wacky is that it will be entirely produced in Arizona by Arizonans. Chandler's Five Star Publications is traditionally publishing it; both authors live in Tempe; illustrations are by multi award-winner Michael Hagelberg, who resides in Flagstaff; and the graphics designer and printer will also be selected from local businesses. It s a good feeling to know that I am doing my part to stimulate the local economy, adds Radke. Read more

State Of The World 2011 (Paperback)
By Danielle Nierenberg

Review & Description

From the Worldwatch Institute, the premier environmental nonprofit, an incisive account of the global food crisis—and how it can be solved.

Known for tackling the most pressing issues that face our world, the Worldwatch Institute has dedicated the 2011 edition of its flagship report to a compelling look at the global food crisis, with particular emphasis on what innovators globally can do to help solve a worldwide problem. State of the World 2011 not only introduces us to the latest agro-ecological innovations and their global applicability but also gives broader insights into issues including poverty, international politics, and even gender equity.

Written in clear, concise language, with easy-to-read charts and tables, State of the World 2011, produced with support from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, provides a practical vision of the innovations that will allow billions of people to feed themselves, while restoring rural economies, creating livelihoods, and sustaining the natural resource base on which agriculture depends.
